The probation service is a public service of national interest, which contributes to the execution of the act of justice and carries out its activity in order to maintain the safety of the community, the social rehabilitation of criminals, and the reduction of the risk of committing new crimes. In Romania, the probation system is represented at the central level by the National Probation Directorate, a public institution with legal personality within the Ministry of Justice, established under Law no. 252/2013 regarding the organization and operation of the probation system, with subsequent amendments and additions, and Government Decision no. 1079/2013 for the approval of the Regulation on the application of the provisions of Law no. 252/2013 on the organization and operation of the probation system and 42 territorial structures, called probation services.
